ANDRITZ to supply evaporation plant to ITC Paperboards and Specialty Papers Division in India

To better align manufacturing capacity in British Columbia with the available long-term fibre supply, Canfor is restructuring its B.C. operations by permanently closing its Chetwynd sawmill and pellet plant and temporarily closing its Houston sawmill for an extended period to facilitate a major redevelopment on the site. The Company intends to build a new, modern, globally competitive manufacturing facility that employs state of the art technology to produce high value products from the sustainable timber supply in the region. Project planning, scoping, preliminary engineering and budgeting are underway. The Company will undertake a comprehensive evaluation of the availability of economic fibre and a thorough project financial analysis, supporting a final investment decision by the end of the second quarter of 2023. Both facilities will be closed following an orderly wind down of operations that is expected to conclude early in the second quarter of 2023 and will remove approximately 750 million board feet of annual production capacity.

Tom Pazdera has been named the new Vice President and General Manager of ND Paper’s Rumford Division. Pazdera brings three decades of experience with internationally recognized companies including International Paper, MeadWestvaco, Boise Paper and, most recently, as President and Unit Head of AV Terrace Bay, in Ontario, Canada, where he oversaw day-to-day operations of an 1,100 tons per day NBSK plant. “Tom brings incredible knowledge and industry experience that will prove instrumental in helping us create a new era of growth and success at our Rumford Division,” said ND Paper CEO Ken Liu. “Because beyond operations and management of our largest facility, Tom will also be critical in helping us execute the continued capital transformation program for the division and the company.” In addition to his background as a project engineer, Pazdera has guided business operations and management teams at several largescale paper manufacturing sites across the country during crucial turning points. “Tom is a proven leader of transformational organizations, because he brings the personable leadership as well as the technical knowledge to advance our operations during a critical time,” confirmed Michael LaVerdiere, ND Paper Executive Vice President and COO.

Total European shipments of graphic papers in April 2022 were down 14.8% vs. April 2021 and year-to-date shipments were down 8.8%. Total European shipments of newsprint in April 2022 were down 10.5% vs. April 2021 and year-to-date shipments were down 5.4%. Total European shipments of sc-magazine in April 2022 were down 16.5% vs. April 2021 and year-to-date shipments were down 9.6%. Total European shipments of coated mechanical reels in April 2022 were down 27.6% vs. April 2021 and year-to-date shipments were down 18.8%. Total European shipments of uncoated mechanical (improved & others) in April 2022 were down 14.1% vs. April 2021 and year-to-date shipments were down 10.0%. Total European shipments of coated woodfree in April 2022 were down 1.6% vs. April 2021 and year-to-date shipments were UP 2.4%. Total European shipments of uncoated woodfree in April 2022 were down 17.3% vs. April 2021 and year-to-date shipments were down 11.5%.
