Public Consultation Open for Revised FSC US National Forest Stewardship Standard

On October 5th, FSC US opened a 75-day public consultation for the first draft of a revised FSC US National Forest Stewardship Standard.

Due in large part to the quality and rigor of our forest management standards, FSC is widely recognized as the world’s most trusted certification system. Draft 1 of the revised Standard offers further refinement of the respected existing standard for the United States, aligning it with the FSC Principles and Criteria Version 5 and the International Generic Indicators.

Our goal is to deliver a standard that is both best-in-class and achievable by streamlining the existing standard and addressing a number of priority issues, identified below. To help achieve this goal, we will need clear, actionable input from an informed and diverse set of stakeholders during this consultation.

Guided by the FSC US Board of Directors (the Standard Development Group) and a technical working group of experts, the Standard reflects the social, environmental and economic values that underpin FSC’s approach.

While much of the Draft 1 revised Standard remains consistent with the existing US Forest Management Standard, the Standard Development Group identified a set of priority issues to address in the revision process, including:

Climate Change
Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, Local Communities’ Rights, and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC)
High Conservation Value Areas, Representative Sample Areas, and the Conservation Area Network
Forest Workers
FSC US Regions and Regional Requirements
FSC US will be hosting a series of three webinars related to the priority issues.

Metsä Board’s Annual and Sustainability Report 2021 has been published

Metsä Board Corporation, part of Metsä Group, has published its 2021 Annual and Sustainability Report as a pdf file in Finnish and English. The combined Annual and Sustainability Report includes the Report of the Board of Directors, the Company's Financial statements and the Corporate governance statement for the financial period 1 January–31 December 2021. The combined Annual and Sustainability Report, published for the first time, responds to the growing demand for sustainability information and the increasing regulatory requirements for sustainability reporting. A broader sustainability section reports on how Metsä Board has progressed towards the ambitious 2030 sustainability targets and the measures taken to achieve them. The reporting entity includes disclosure of climate risks under the TCFD and SASB reporting for pulp and paper product industry.

Forest certification systems are effective tools to demonstrate sustainable forestry

“While a number of uniquely different forest certification systems are used around the world they: 1- have much in common; 2- share many basic objectives; 3- provide an additional measure of commitment to sustainable forestry; and, 4- are effective tools for supporting a responsible marketplace.” Two Sides, the initiative exploding the myths and setting out the facts about print media's sustainability in a clear and concise manner, has brought together facts from a variety of sources illustrate just these points. See below for a snapshot of some of their findings: “There are dozens of forest certification programs around the world. Two programs – the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) - account for the vast majority of certified forests and chain-of-custody certificates. These two programs operate around the world.”
