Smurfit Kappa launches Bag-in-Box packaging solution for hand sanitiser

Smurfit Kappa’s Bag-in-Box packaging is perfectly suitable for sanitiser due to it being a hygienic, easy-to-use and flexible solution that is available in a range of sizes from 1.5 to 20 litres and is suitable both for end consumers or as a refill solution.

Furthermore, Bag-in-Box’s high performance films have a high oxygen barrier to protect products from air and light so the hand sanitiser’s physical and chemical properties remain intact. The packaging also brings a number of environmental benefits including the ability to optimise the supply chain and reduced weight and plastic in comparison to other traditional packaging. For instance, a 5L Bag-in-Box pack uses 54% less plastic than to a 5L PET bottle.

Equipped with the blue Vitop® tap specifically designed for detergents and a reinforced gland, the new pack has performed very well in tests. Testing is still underway to ensure compatibility with as a wide range of hand sanitiser formulae as possible.

Depending on their formulae, it may be required that hand sanitisers are provided in UN homologated packaging solutions. This is an area in which Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box has previously demonstrated its expertise as it already includes homologated 5L and 10 Bag-in-Box solutions in its portfolio.

Stora Enso and Tetra Pak are joining forces to explore the possibility of building a new recycling line to significantly increase the recycling of used beverage cartons in Central and Eastern Europe. In the first stage the recycled post-consumer beverage carton material would come from countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
