AF&PA Commends EPA Action to Balance Benefits and Costs

American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Donna Harman issued the following statement regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) memorandum outlining plans to implement robust benefit-cost analysis across the agency’s rulemaking process. The memorandum follows the agency’s June 2018 advanced notice of proposed rulemaking regarding the benefits and costs of rulemaking and indicates the process will begin with the Clean Air Act.

“We applaud EPA for taking the historic step to advance common-sense regulatory policy that ensures its regulations will do more good than harm. For over 38 years, every president has directed regulatory agencies to embrace this sound principle when designing regulations. But Administrator Wheeler breaks new ground with plans for binding regulations to ensure that the benefits of EPA’s regulations will justify the costs. We welcome this new foundation for sustainable regulation and the news that similar regulations under other EPA statutes will follow the Clean Air Act rulemaking. All will serve to protect the environment while allowing the economy to grow and create new opportunities for all Americans long into the future.”

New wind park will supply UPM’s Finnish paper mills with sustainable power from early 2023

UPM's commitment to wind power in Finland will significantly decrease emissions resulting from UPM’s paper production. The new wind park in Pyhäjoki is expected to reach full capacity in generating climate-friendly power in early 2023, providing a long-term renewable energy solution for UPM’s Finnish paper mills. In 2019, UPM signed a Wind Power Purchase agreement (PPA) with German renewable energy development company wpd. This contract enabled the construction of a new onshore wind park in Pyhäjoki, Finland, which is now in its final stages of development; the park is starting operations in the autumn 2022. It will reach full capacity in generating sustainable power in January 2023 and will continue to do so for 25-30 years.

Diversey, a Solenis Company and NatureLoop Sign MOU to Upcycle Single-Use Plastic Waste

Diversey has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with NatureLoop, a Kuala Lumpur-based organization dedicated to addressing the global plastic waste crisis. The partnership focuses on upcycling single-use plastic waste into new, useful products. Amrinder Sethi, country business director for the Philippines and Malaysia at Diversey, and Brandon Chong Chee Wing, Founder and CEO of NatureLoop, formalized the collaboration. The signing was witnessed by Sherif Fahmy, vice president for Southeast Asia at Diversey, and Siew Zhi Zhou, designer and production manager at NatureLoop. As the global plastic waste problem intensifies, this collaboration aims to transform used plastic containers from Diversey customers into sustainable products like coffee tables, stools, wall clocks, tissue boxes, sports medals, and decorative items. Under the MOU, NatureLoop will collect between 200 to 500 kg of empty plastic containers from Diversey customers each month, with support from Diversey Malaysia. These containers will be processed at NatureLoop's local facilities to create high-value upcycled products.
