FSC International Releases Global Market Survey

Every two years, FSC International conducts a survey of certified companies worldwide, to better understand perspectives about FSC and the market for FSC-certified products. Recently, FSC released the Global Market Survey for 2014, which includes a range of interesting findings.

The survey was conducted during June-July 2014, with results based on responses from 3,656 certificate holders from 95 countries. This represents a 13 percent response rate (based on 27,289 certified companies in the FSC system at that time). 445 responses came from companies in the U.S.

Some of the key findings include the following:
* Client demand was the most common reason to become FSC certified, cited by 52.5 percent of respondents.
* 81.5 percent of certificate holders say the FSC label adds value to their products.
* 78.9 percent of certificate holders are satisfied with their FSC certification.
* 89.3 percent of certificate holders consider FSC to be a credible organization.

In addition to the findings above, the report digs into details about different sectors in the forest products industry.

For example, paper is the most commonly purchased FSC certified product with the paper industry going through transition. The graphic paper subsector is suffering from decreasing demand, while demand for packaging-grade paper is rising significantly due to the increasing demand for online shopping.

Australia’s illegal logging regulation recognizes PEFC

PEFC-certified companies are now recognized as automatically meeting the due diligence requirements in Australia’s illegal logging regulation. Under Australia’s Illegal Logging Prohibition Regulation 2012, importers of regulated timber products, and processors of Australian harvested logs, are required to establish and maintain a documented due diligence system. The due diligence system sets out the process by which the importer or processor will carry out due diligence and meet the requirements of the regulation. Australia’s Department of Agriculture and Water Resource has determined that under PEFC (including AFS, Australia’s PEFC-endorsed national forest certification system) Chain of Custody standard, certified businesses are required to maintain an equivalent due diligence system.

Smurfit Kappa receives SBTi approval for carbon reduction targets

Smurfit Kappa has had its emissions reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as consistent with levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The targets covering greenhouse gas emissions from Smurfit Kappa’s operations (scopes 1 and 2) are consistent with reductions required to keep global warming to well-below 2°C. The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) which defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets. The initiative mobilises companies to set science-based targets in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Emission reduction targets are considered ‘science-based’ when their CO2 reduction targets are in line with what the latest climate science says is needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
