UPM Raflatac signs up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment

UPM Raflatac has signed up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment among 250 organisations including many of the world’s largest packaging producers, brands, retailers and recyclers, as well as governments and NGOs. The Global Commitment and its vision for a circular economy for plastic is led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with UN Environment. The commitment has been officially unveiled at the Our Ocean Conference in Bali today Monday, October 29.

By signing the commitment UPM Raflatac wants to demonstrate its commitment to labeling a smarter future beyond fossils. By developing sustainable labeling solutions and partnerships UPM Raflatac supports brand owners in eliminating unnecessary plastic packaging and achieving their target of 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. Innovative solutions such as the RafCycle recycling concept, thin film materials, wash-off adhesives and label materials containing recycled content are good examples of how UPM Raflatac can enable the circular economy.

The Global Commitment aims to create ‘a new normal’ for plastic packaging. Targets will be reviewed every 18 months, and become increasingly ambitious over the coming years. Businesses that sign the commitment will publish annual data on their progress to help drive momentum and ensure transparency.

Berry’s GRI Index was prepared in accordance with the GRI Standards Core option. GRI is the most widely used framework for sustainability reporting used by businesses, governments, and other organizations. Notable statistics in support of Impact 2025 from the Company’s GRI Index include: Recycled Content: Berry set a new record for annual usage of post-consumer plastic in FY19 of 70,000 metric tons (154 million pounds). Water: In the year 2019, the Company decreased absolute water intensity 12% from 2018 to 2019, far exceeding the 1% year-over-year reduction target.

Responsible Wood welcomes Woolworths new Australian-made paper bag

Responsible Wood, our national member for Australia, has welcomed an announcement by Woolworths, one of the country’s main supermarkets, that it will be stocking PEFC-certified paper bags. The move comes ahead of a progressive roll-out of Australian-made paper bags over the next 12 months. Woolworths paper shopping bags were first launched in June 2020 in response to customer demand for a paper carry bag option. “Whilst almost all customers are now bringing their own reusable bags, we know unplanned shops will present a challenge from time to time,” said Natalie Davis, Managing Director of Woolworths Supermarkets. “Earlier this year we introduced the option of a paper bag, which can be recycled at home, and the feedback from customers has been positive.”
