Myanmar lays the foundations for sustainable forest management

“Third-party forest certificationMyanmar MFCS systems are critical actors to ensure Myanmar timber products are accepted by international markets”, said Mr Khin Mg Yi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC), at the launch of Myanmar’s third party timber certification system by the Myanmar Forest Certification Committee (MFCC).

“Myanmar had a long established and successful history of forest and timber management and related laws.

In parallel with democratically people-centred political, economic and social reform, Myanmar has been conducting forest sector reforms to conserve forest resources,” Mr Khin Mg Yi stressed.

MFCC’s timber certification system is an important building block as the country continues to develop a national forest certification system in line with PEFC requirements.

This launch marks phase oneMyanmar MFCS 2 of the Myanmar Timber Legality Assurance System (MTLAS), and forms part of a 3-year project by MFCC and PEFC to support the country as it transitions to the sustainable management of its forests.

Richard Laity, PEFC Development Officer, South East Asia, offered some opening remarks, noting the development of the system through a multi-stakeholder approach.

“Forest certification is particularly advantageous in terms of it being market focused and offering an increased opportunity for, and access to, international markets and trade for Myanmar,” Richard highlighted.

Public Consultation: Small changes process to amend four International Generic Indicators (IGI)

The ‘small changes’ process mandated by the FSC Board of Directors at their 86th Meeting aims to improve aspects of gender inclusiveness and the glossary of terms by revising four International Generic Indicators (IGI) in the FSC-STD-60-004 V2-0 EN. For this purpose, an internal technical working group (I-TWG) was appointed in FSC’s Performance and Standards Unit (PSU) in October 2021 to propose draft revised IGI (1.6.4, 4.6.4, 2.2.3 and 2.2.5) and to define a new glossary term. ‘Small changes’ are defined as the revision or addition of one or two requirements. PSU is following Clause 2.2 in Annex 4 of FSC-PRO-01-001 Development and Revision of FSC Normative Documents to conduct this process. Paper or Plastic? In a Circular Economy, the Answer is Clear (twosidesna.org)

In today’s industrial marketplace, the concept of a circular economy is finally inching beyond theoretical ideals to real-world applications that will make our planet healthier and more sustainable. But becoming truly circular doesn’t come easy or cheap. It’s a challenge that requires intent, investment and innovation. The paper industry figured this out decades ago, and it has been at the leading edge of circularity ever since. In fact, paper manufacturing exemplifies the very definition of circularity – industrial processes and economic activities that are 1) restorative or regenerative by design, 2) enable resources used to maintain their highest value for as long as possible, and 3) aim to eliminate waste through the superior design of materials, products and systems. Most alternatives don’t even come close. Take plastics, for example.

A reply to USA Today: Not only is paper good for learning – it’s one of the most sustainable products around us!

Last week, USA Today published a column entitled “Paper may be bad for trees, but it is good for people” by Tal Gross, an assistant professor at Columbia University (@talgross https://twitter.com/talgross). Here at Two Sides we could not agree more with the findings and statements related to the benefits of paper for education and learning. Mr. Gross outlines research showing the following: •Students that read on paper versus screens score better in comprehension tests. •Those that take notes on paper versus a laptop learn more from lectures. •Those that doodle on paper (versus sitting still) while listening to a recording performed better in memory tests. Neuroscientific experiments have shown that there is a stronger emotional connection with print and paper versus screens, and our fact sheet Print and paper play a key role in learning and literacy highlights the tremendous social benefits of print and paper. We also have more good news for Mr. Gross, as outlined in the facts below, regarding the environmental sustainability of paper.
