UPM Raflatac announces clear-on-clear and solid white label materials to join PP Lite sustainable range

UPM Raflatac has further expanded its PP Lite range of labeling solutions for the European market with the introduction of two new products, clear-on-clear PP FTC Lite and PP Solid White FTC Lite. The PP Lite range helps brands achieve their sustainability targets with lightweight, eco-designed face materials, adhesives, and backing materials.

Products in the PP Lite range combine a lighter face material, a lower coat-weight adhesive, and a lighter backing. This makes them incredibly lightweight overall, optimizes raw material use, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, energy and water consumption, and waste. As well as helping brand owners increase the sustainability of their packaging, PP Lite range also boosts productivity across the value chain.

PP Solid White FTC Lite is a non-pearlescent, solid white PP film that offers a bright white base color with dependable performance. PP Clear FTC Lite is a clear PP film that can be combined with R704 adhesive and PET Lite liner to offer a coveted no-label look as well as clean performance in converting and dispensing. Both films are ideal for multi-purpose labeling applications on smooth, rigid containers. The high strength of PP Solid White FTC Lite’s solid core also makes it ideal for multilayer and peel-and-read applications. Both label solutions meet EU food safety standards.

A new corrugated waste bin designed for the hygienic disposal of face masks

The use of face masks during the recent pandemic has justifiably grown to hundreds of millions worldwide. However, masks can easily end up littering public places or natural sites. Futupack is a Finnish company that designs and implements sustainable packaging solutions. “We wanted the mask bin to be as aesthetic as possible so that it could be placed easily into any indoor environment. The mask bin is delivered flat, and can be quickly assembled. In addition, full instructions on assembly for the consumers are printed on to the bin itself. When the mask bin is full, it is easy to close the lid, and the entire bin can be safely and hygienically disposed of with the incinerated waste,” says Jani Mäkipää, Lead Packaging Engineer at Futupack.

Tetra Pak to invest €100 million to expand European manufacturing for more sustainable solutions

Tetra Pak announces an ambitious investment program dedicated to its factory in Châteaubriant, specialised in the production of caps. Spanning across a three-year period (late 2021-2023), this €100 million project will support the plant’s transition to the production of tethered caps by 2024. Tethered caps help to minimise litter, as the cap will stay attached to the package. This step – that is in addition to the company’s commitment to invest approximately €100 million per year over the next 5-10 years to develop more sustainable packaging solutions - is key to ensuring that Tetra Pak’s customers in Europe will be ready to comply with the Single Use Plastics (SUP) Directive, an integral part of the wider approach announced in the Plastics Strategy and an important element of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan.

Metsä Board among the best of the best in EcoVadis 2022 rating

Metsä Board has, once again, been awarded the Platinum level rating by EcoVadis for the company’s sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Having improved the score to a record level 87/100 Metsä Board is among the highest 1% of companies assessed in the manufacture of corrugated paper and paperboard and containers of paper and paperboard. EcoVadis assesses companies covering four themes. Metsä Board was in the top 1% of companies for Environment, Labour & Human Rights and Sustainable Procurement and in the top 7% for Ethics. For the first time Metsä Board scored the full 100/100 in the Environment section. “At Metsä Board, sustainability is an integral part of our strategy and daily operations – now and in the future. Reaching the full 100 score in the Environment section and the Leader status in carbon management assessment acknowledges our journey towards fossil free production and products by the end of 2030,” says Mika Joukio, CEO at Metsä Board.
