Report: Contract Packaging Industry Worth $25.67 Billion and Growing

Just-released State of the Industry Report from the Contract Packaging Association provides data, insights, research, and perspectives from 120 CEOs and senior industry executives. Learn more during an April 5 webinar.

The Contract Packaging Association (CPA) has released its State of the Industry Report, a comprehensive benchmark study that provides valuable insights for anyone involved in the industry. The report combines 100-question interviews with more than 120 CEOs and senior industry executives with primary and secondary research, making it a valuable planning tool for anyone connected to the industry.

In a webinar scheduled for April 5 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. CST, Carl Melville, COO of The Melville Group, the company responsible for conducting the survey, will discuss business trends driving innovation—including sustainability and the impact of globalization—along with an industry snapshot and key metrics. The webinar is free for both CPA members and non-members; register through the CPA website.

According to the report, the contract manufacturing and contract packaging industry serving the U.S. food and CPG sector is currently worth $25.67 billion and is projected to continue growing at two to four times the pace of the sector it serves. The trends driving and supporting this growth are rated by industry leaders for their impact, including:

  • The Amazon Effect/The Walmart Effect
  • Private Equity Investment
  • Grocery consolidation/food company consolidation
  • Offshore and Mexico-based competition and more

“One example of change is the rise of private equity,” says Ron Puvak, CPA Managing Director. “Investment levels and investor size are both increasing, with large PE firms such as Goldman Sachs now investing in our rapidly evolving industry.”

Unlike third-party statistical research summaries, the report goes beyond the numbers, combining executive insights with qualitative and quantitative primary and secondary research.

Smurfit Kappa agrees to acquire state of the art 600,000 tonne recycled containerboard mill

Smurfit Kappa Group plc agrees to acquire Verzuolo, a containerboard business in Northern Italy, for a cash consideration of €360 million. The Verzuolo mill owned by the Burgo Group, is situated close to the port of Savona in the northwest of Italy. The PM9 machine was newly constructed in 2002 and converted into a 600,000 tonne capacity recycled containerboard machine in 2019. Verzuolo is highly complementary to SKG’s existing business and is strategically positioned to serve both the Southern European region and other markets ensuring we continue to provide the best service to our corrugated customers. The acquisition will deliver significant synergistic benefits including technical and production optimisation, and increased containerboard integration within the Group. The cash consideration will be funded from the Group’s existing resources. It is expected that the acquisition will complete during the fourth quarter, subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approval.

SCA to increase kraftliner prices by € 50 per tonne

SCA increases prices on brown and white kraftliner by € 50 per tonne in Europe. The new prices are valid from August, 1, 2021. “Driven by the continued strong market for transport packaging, the global demand for kraftliner remains high”, says Mikael Frölander, VP Sales & Marketing Containerboard.
