Double certification continues to grow, joint PEFC/FSC data shows

There has been a further increase in in double certified forest area in absolute terms, according to the most recent data released by PEFC and FSC, the two global forest certification systems.

While the total global certified area grew between December 2016 and June 2017 by 3.7 million hectares, the double certified area increased by almost one million hectares (or 25% of the growth).

In total, 431.4 million hectares of forests were certified to either PEFC or FSC in mid-2017 (2016: 427.7) of which 71.1 million hectares (or 16.5%) were double certified (2016: 70.1 million/16.5%).

Help avoid double certification
“This is at odds with our common objective to expand sustainable forest management”, said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International. “Every single hectare of double certified forest area is a hectare too much.”

“One cause of double certification is market access, and here companies have a role to play: by accepting both PEFC and FSC, they remove the pressure on forest owners to double certify.”

“In turn, this will help precious financial resources to be focused on expanding certification to forests that are not yet certified to either system,” reminded Mr. Gunneberg.

Stora Enso and Huhtamaki launch industrial scale recycling programme for paper cups in Europe

Huhtamaki and Stora Enso have joined forces to launch a new paper cup recycling initiative, The Cup Collective. The programme, which is the first of its kind in Europe, aims to recycle and capture the value of used paper cups on an industrial scale. Initially the programme will be implemented across the Benelux. With the aim of setting new standards for paper cup collection and recycling in Europe, The Cup Collective has issued an open invitation for partners from across the supply chain to get involved in working towards a systemic European solution. The EU has set recycling target for paper and board packaging of 85% by 2030. Paper cups are recyclable but need to be collected before they can be turned into new paper products. The Cup Collective initiative will create the necessary collection infrastructure to significantly increase the recycling rate of wood-fiber in paper cups. Above all, the programme will make it as easier for consumers and businesses to collect used paper cups to be regenerated into valuable recycled raw material.

Macedonia submits national forest certification system: public consultation open

The global public consultation for the Macedonia national forest certification system is now open. Stakeholders globally are invited to comment on its compliance with PEFC International's Sustainability Benchmarks by 18 March 2017. The Council for Sustainable Forest Management in the Republic of Macedonia is one of our newest national members after joining last November during the General Assembly.
