Smurfit Kappa has won two prestigious PPI awards, demonstrating its leadership in the global paper industry.

Organised by RISI, the PPI awards recognise the stand-out achievements in the global pulp and paper industry.

Smurfit Kappa operations from both sides of the Atlantic were lauded with the company’s Zülpich  Paper Mill in Germany winning the ‘Resilience – Managing Risk’ award and the Cali Paper Mill in Colombia taking the prize for ‘Bringing Paper to Life – Innovative Printing & Writing Campaign of the Year’.

The Zülpich Mill, which was established in 1873, has an exemplary record in health and safety and a robust risk management strategy. Speaking about the award, Christian Ludwig, Managing Director, said: “We have always had the full support of the Group to build up our resilience strategy to the standard is at today and we are encouraged to take an innovative approach to finding solutions.

“I would like to thank my team in Zülpich for going the extra mile across all activities and our day-to-day business.”

The Cali Paper Mill certainly delivered on the brief of ‘Bringing Paper to Life’ with its CartoPrint school paper display. The vibrant appearance of the product, which was created in a collaboration with the Packaging Division, was inspired by its sustainable forestry origins and the ongoing work to preserve biodiversity that the company carries out.

Luis Vasquez, Sales Manager of the Pulp and Paper Division, said: “The bold colours and multi-sensory CartoPrint display is a talking point in many stores and invites customers to explore it further.

“Like with all our products, we seek to promote the life cycle of paper within a circular economy, while bringing innovation to every stage of the production process.”

Norske Skog: Successful launch of packaging paper production and good cash flow from operations in weaker markets

Norske Skog’s EBITDA in the second quarter of 2023 was NOK 380 million, a decrease from NOK 675 million in the first quarter of 2023. The main driver for the lower second quarter EBITDA was lower publication paper sales prices. The cash flow from operations in the quarter was NOK 353 million. During the second quarter Norske Skog entered the packaging paper market with a successful production start-up of Bruck PM3, and the first rolls of packaging paper delivered to customers. The rockslide at Norske Skog Saugbrugs will likely keep the paper machine PM6 out of the publication paper market through the first half of 2024. An insurance compensation for business interruption is therefore recognized in the second quarter results. The start-up of the Golbey conversion project is postponed to the second quarter of 2024. Despite the rockslide at Norske Skog Saugbrugs and weakened demand in all segments in the quarter, we have managed to maintain high sales volumes, healthy profitability and a strong financial position.

Stora Enso initiates a plan to permanently close down pulp and paper production at Kvarnsveden and Veitsiluoto mills

Stora Enso will start co-determination negotiations with employees at its Kvarnsveden Mill in Sweden and Veitsiluoto Mill in Finland regarding a plan to permanently close down pulp and paper production at both mills. The planned closures would take place during the third quarter of 2021, and affect directly 670 people in Finland and 440 people in Sweden. Paper demand in Europe has declined for over a decade. This trend has further accelerated due to the pandemic, which has led to changes in consumer behaviour. As a consequence, there is a significant overcapacity in the European paper market, which has resulted in historically low price levels and challenged the cost-competitiveness of many paper mills. Both Kvarnsveden and Veitsiluoto mills are loss-making, and their profitability is expected to remain unsatisfactory also going forward. No decisions regarding the planned closures nor employee impact will be taken until the local co-determination negotiations have been concluded.
