The first edition of Newsquest’s new weekly newspaper for Oldham, The Oldham Times, hit the streets today (Thursday, Sept 21).
Copies have been selling so fast in newsagents across the town that many retailers have already sold out. Newsquest has therefore taken the unprecedented step to order an additional print run.
The launch follows the closure of the daily Oldham Chronicle on the 31st August, which had been published in the town for 163 years.
A number of former Oldham Chronicle journalists have been recruited to produce local content for the new title. Priced at 80p, The Oldham Times provide news, sport, and comment on the local community. It features a Weekend leisure guide and a free 7-Day TV guide, and platforms for local advertisers.
The Oldham Times is edited by Ian Savage, Group Editor of The Bolton News and the Bury Times group
Ian said: “The focus has been on gathering community news and sport to give as wide a coverage as possible. We have been able to provide the kind of local, relevant stories that I hope readers want and will enjoy. Thanks to our journalists who know Oldham so well and have worked there for many years. Now that we are up and running, we anticipate the content will go from strength to strength.”
Nick Fellows, managing director for Newsquest North West, said: “The early signs are very encouraging. The town of Oldham has responded overwhelmingly to the launch of The Oldham Times. Sales have been nothing short of outstanding; the new title has certainly won the backing of both the general public and the local business community.”
