PEFC Strengthens Collaboration in South America

Developing a much stronger presence in South America to better communicate the benefits of forest certification to forest owners, companies and consumers – this is the objective of the first PEFC South American Regional Workshop.

The workshop, which will take place from 20-24 April 2015 in Montevideo, Uruguay, will bring together South American based PEFC organizations and external stakeholders to assess opportunities for identifying potential synergies and improving collaboration and coordination, and to develop strategies to improve market demand and access for PEFC-certified products.

“For our country, and in particular PEFC Uruguay, it is an honor to host this first regional meeting,” said Atilio Ligrone, National Secretary of PEFC Uruguay and the Manager of the Society of Forest Producers. “Ultimately, our goal is to bring more forests under sustainable forest management, and with this first regional gathering we aim to enable internal and external stakeholders to join forces to better reach out to everybody along the timber value chain: from forest owners to companies to consumers.”

The 45-metre-tall tower forms the culmination of a 900-metre-long boardwalk through the forest, and offers visitors a 360-degree view over the trees, hills, lakes and meadows that make up the natural landscape. Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), the second largest airport in the Philippines, has received a new terminal 2, with a gigantic roof made of PEFC-certified timber. The concept for the terminal was inspired by the local climate, materiality, feel, arts, crafts and industrial skills.

Sappi North America Receives Platinum Rating from EcoVadis

Sappi North America, Inc., a leading producer and supplier of diversified paper, packaging products and pulp, has been awarded a platinum score in the latest EcoVadis rating, alongside the company's regional counterparts Sappi Europe and Sappi Southern Africa. EcoVadis is a leader in third-party evaluations of business sustainability performance, and its platinum medal is only awarded to those companies who score in the top 1% for sustainability practices. "We are very pleased to see improvement in all four categories," said Sandy Taft, Director of Sustainability at Sappi North America. "We are developing new strategies and processes to improve even further upon these results next year."

UPM receives all-time high EcoVadis score thanks to its renewed social responsibility agenda

EcoVadis has recognised UPM on a Platinum level based on the company’s sustainability performance in the following four categories: Environment, Labour and human rights, Ethics and Sustainable procurement. Only one per cent of the 90,000 global companies assessed received the Platinum score. Compared to previous years’ assessments, UPM received its all-time high score of 87/100. “The main improvement steps were taken in the Labour and human rights category. We have introduced several new social responsibility targets for 2030, focusing strongly on diversity and inclusion and fair rewarding. We have also developed our human rights due diligence processes and reporting,” says Sami Lundgren, VP, Responsibility at UPM. “The EcoVadis sustainability rating helps our customers assess the responsibility of their suppliers. UPM’s renewed Platinum rating recognises the work we have done to promote sustainability in the whole value chain.”
