Paper machine shutdown will cost 222 jobs in Calhoun, Tennessee

Resolute Forest Products announces production cuts to their paper business in Calhoun.  The company will close paper machines #3 & #5 at the Calhoun plant. That will cost 222 jobs to the operation on the Hiwassee River at the McMinn/Bradley line.

The company says they are still committed to the remaining operations at the plant. 491 workers will remain.

Resolute has recently expanded operations there, investing in a tissue machine and converting operation, and a continuous pulp digester. Both will remain in operation.

Resolute officials blame the paper shutdown to “challenging long-term market conditions.” Primarily, a steep drop in demand for newsprint and uncoated groundwood paper.

The shutdown of the paper machines also means closing the thermo-mechanical pulp mill, a wood yard and a paper wrap line, as well as reductions in the shipping department.

Mactac Purchases Canadian Roll Label Distributor, Label Supply

Mactac®, a LINTEC Company, is acquiring Label Supply, headquartered in Ontario, Canada. Label Supply has been servicing the Canadian roll label market for more than three decades. The acquisition is expected to close June 1, 2023, and consists of an established, turnkey facility with 11 finishing assets, a comprehensive transportation/shipping fleet, robust laboratory and technical resource group, and an in-house ink partner. With the added support of Mactac, Label Supply benefits from a larger customer base, capital access, information technology, and broad, consistent product supply. The acquisition expands the geographic reach of both companies in the Canadian market, creating a unique service and product offering that provides specialty products, service, and large quantities to more customers throughout Eastern Canada.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö interim report January-March 2018: Strong sales growth in constant currency and synergy realization to continue

Q1/2018 highlights (vs Q1/2017 proforma): • Net sales EUR 572.4 million (EUR 566.9 million), an increase of 1.0%. In constant currency growth was 5.9%, driven by higher selling prices. • Continued good demand across most markets • Comparable EBITDA EUR 66.7 million (EUR 79.4 million), representing 11.7% (14.0%) of net sales in an environment of significant raw material cost escalation • Net profit EUR 21.2 million (EUR 24.2 million).
