Amcor continues to make important progress in developing and delivering packaging that maximizes its benefits and limits adverse effects on the environment – and is determined to be a leader in accomplishing much more.
That is the primary message in Amcor’s 2016 Sustainability Review, which covers developments and achievements during the company’s most recent fiscal year and is now available online, at www.amcor.com/sustainability.
“As the world’s population grows, so does demand for safe and effective food, medicines and other products,” said Ron Delia, Amcor’s chief executive officer. “The packaging we develop and supply protects those products and extends their shelf lives, while reducing wasted material, water and energy across the global supply chain.
“Fulfilling our commitment to responsible packaging requires constant and continuing effort and innovation, and is something that everyone and everything with a stake in Amcor – including customers, colleagues, investors and our planet – is counting on us to do.”
Sustainability performance highlights for Amcor’s fiscal 2016, which ended in June, included:
- Surpassing the company’s EnviroAction five-year targets dating to its fiscal 2011 by reducing greenhouse gas-emissions intensity 28 percent, waste-to-landfill intensity 62 percent, and water-use intensity 25 percent.
- Collaborating with strategic suppliers to apply EcoVadis – a global platform for evaluating the social and environmental performances of companies. Eighty-five percent of Amcor’s worldwide procurement spend is now directed to suppliers that are compliant with the company’s supplier code of conduct and participate in EcoVadis.
- Embarking on a partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which envisions an economy where plastics never become waste.
Amcor was recognised again by global and regional sustainability indices for its sustainability performance, including by the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index for Australia, the MSCI Global Sustainability Index series, the Ethibel Excellence Investment Register, and the FTSE4Good Index. Amcor received a gold rating in the calendar 2015 Corporate Social Responsibility assessment conducted by EcoVadis.
Additionally, the company’s innovative packaging solutions earned several industry honours, among them three European Aluminium Foil Association awards and two World Packaging Organization’s Worldstar awards. Each of the innovations recognised by those awards reduced the environmental footprints of previous designs and delivered other sustainability benefits.
Amcor’s 2016 Sustainability Report was prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative’s G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and AccountAbility’s AA1000 Assurance Standard (2008). EY independently assessed the report and confirmed its compliance with the GRI framework at a core level.
