UPM sets ambitious responsibility targets for 2030

UPM has set new ambitious responsibility targets for 2030 in eleven focus areas that have been  inspired by the UN sustainable development goals in economic, social and environmental dimensions and adapted to UPM activities.

These targets aim at achieving equality, mitigating climate change, developing biodiversity and last but not least, support an economy compatible with the environment.

Among the most challenging targets for 2030, let’s highlight:
•Zero process waste to landfills or to incineration without energy recovery. Over 90% of UPM’s total process waste is currently recycled or recovered.
•100 % of wood fibres used will be from certified sources. The certified fibre share in 2015 at UPM was 84 %.
•30% reduction in fossil CO2 emissions from a 2008 baseline.
•100 % of spend on UPM raw material to be qualified against UPM Supplier Code that includes social, ethic and environmental criteria.
•All operations to have a certified OHS system by 2030

Last year, Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach the Paris Agreement ten years early and be net zero carbon by 2040. Verizon, Reckitt Benckiser (RB), and Infosys recently joined the pledge—sending an important signal to the market that there will be rapid growth in demand for products and services that help reduce carbon emissions. Amazon’s new Climate Pledge Fund will accelerate investment in innovations for the zero carbon economy of the future.

AF&PA Pledges Support to Solving Issues Facing U.S. Recycling System

American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Donna Harman commended the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for organizing the America Recycles Day Recycling Summit. On Thursday afternoon, she will join industry executives in addressing the EPA headquarter-based summit and in signing an EPA pledge to help identify solutions to issues facing the U.S. recycling system. “Our industry shares concerns over the challenges facing the U.S. recycling system. Recovered paper markets are complex, dynamic and efficient, yet the paper and paper-packaging industry continues to innovate and adapt to market demands to drive future success. Moreover, paper, by weight, is the most recycled material from municipal solid waste streams in the United States today, and we have met or exceeded a 63 percent recovery rate for paper and paper-based packaging for each of the last nine years.
