Finnish unions extend strikes over labour reforms by another week (Reuters)

Finland's industrial, logistics and electrical workers have agreed to extend strikes in protest against planned labour market reforms to a fourth week, the head of trade union association SAK said on Wednesday. The workers have been on strike since March 11, targeting exports, imports and cargo transportation. "The strikes will continue from Monday morning onwards for a week," SAK President Jarkko Eloranta told Reuters. "We are trying to negotiate and compromise with the government but unfortunately there has been no response to these efforts." Several of Finland's largest companies have said the strikes, which are disrupting ports and the rail system, are negatively affecting their operations.

Hardback revenues were up 0.4%, coming in at $3.3 billion; Paperbacks were down 2.0%, with $3.1 billion in revenue; Mass Market was down 22.9% to $140.0 million; and Special Bindings were up 2.2%, with $210.0 million in revenue.

Long production interruption at Metsä Board’s Kemi board mill

On 21 March 2024, a gas explosion occurred at the evaporation plant of Metsä Board's associated company Metsä Fibre's Kemi bioproduct mill. Three people were slightly exposed to hydrogen sulphide and were referred for a health check. The persons have returned to work after the check. Metsä Board's Kemi board mill, which produces white kraftliner, is part of the Kemi integrated mill. Metsä Board's board mill was not damaged in the explosion, but the mill is not operational because unbleached pulp cannot be produced without the chemical recovery of the bioproduct mill. Due to repair work of the evaporation plant at the bioproduct mill, Metsä Board's board mill is currently estimated to be out of production for approximately 10–12 weeks. The company investigates the possibility of restarting the board production at a significantly lower production level than normal during the repair work at the bioproduct mill. In addition, the company explores possibilities to offer alternative products to customers.

Metsä Group will launch a pre-study for the first commercial mill producing the Kuura textile fibre. Kuura is one of the spearhead projects of Metsä Group’s innovation company Metsä Spring. The goal is to increase the refinement of pulp sustainably and efficiently. Produced from softwood pulp, the Kuura textile fibre is a new material developed by Metsä Group, in which Finnish wood is converted into a sustainable product with high added value – without fossil fuels. The textile fibre has been researched and developed at the Äänekoski demo plant, among other places. The new pre-study is the first planning stage of a potential commercial mill project. During the pre-study, the size of the mill investment – and the profitability of the business idea – will be determined. Holmen's Board has decided to invest SEK 1.5 billion in the construction of Blisterliden Wind Farm in Skellefteå Municipality. As part of Holmen's drive to develop its renewable energy business, the investment will boost hydro and wind power production by 20 percent. “This investment is fully in line with our strategy to create long-term value, while facilitating the green transition through greater electrification. Cost per package was flat, as lower line-haul expense and improved dock productivity offset higher first- and last-mile costs. FedEx Freight operating results decreased due to lower fuel surcharges, reduced weight per shipment and lower shipments, partially offset by higher base yield and the benefit from one additional operating day. Last year's third quarter operating income included a $30 million gain on the sale of a facility. The company completed a $1 billion accelerated share repurchase (ASR) transaction during the quarter. Approximately 4.1 million shares were delivered under the ASR agreement. The year-to-date decrease in outstanding shares benefited third quarter results by $0.09 per diluted share.

Production at Metsä Group's board mills and sawmills will be temporarily shut down due to the ongoing strikes. Production at the Rauma, Vilppula, Renko and Lappeenranta sawmills will stop on Friday 22 March. The production of board mills in Simpele, Kyro, Tako (Tampere) and Äänekoski is expected to stop on Monday 25 March. Previously, the production at Metsä Group's pulp and board mills in Kemi, pulp and BCTMP mills in Joutseno and the BCTMP mill in Kaskinen has been shut down. The mills can be started up when raw material is available and product transports start.

Metsä Group and ANDRITZ to construct a demo plant for developing new lignin products

Metsä Group will construct a demo plant for lignin refining in connection with its Äänekoski bioproduct mill. The equipment will be supplied by technology group ANDRITZ. Construction will begin in Summer 2024, and the demo plant will be completed in late 2025. The plant’s daily capacity will be two tonnes of the lignin product. Lignin is a substance in wood that binds wood fibres together. In pulp production, lignin is separated from the fibres into black liquor in the chemical cycle and used as bioenergy. Lignin could also be used in chemical and material applications. Metsä Group and ANDRITZ will focus on developing the production process of the new lignin product and its integration with the bioproduct mill, as well as the product properties suitable for various end uses.

Keep US Posted — a nonprofit advocacy group of consumers, nonprofits, newspapers, greeting card publishers, magazines, catalogs and small businesses — is calling attention to new analysis, which shows that U.S. Postal Service’s practice of raising mailing rates every six months is based on flawed economic forecasting that greatly underestimates the rate hikes’ impact on lost mail volume. The report, which was commissioned by the Greeting Card Association and the Association for Postal Commerce (PostCom), has been published just weeks before USPS is expected to ask the Postal Regulatory Commission to approve the sixth stamp hike in just two years, likely occurring in July. According to the report, USPS is basing stamp hikes on a demand model which underestimates the elasticities (or price sensitivity) of its consumers —relying too heavily on historical data, among other issues.

Metsä Board will not invest in the Kaskinen folding boxboard mill

Metsä Board announced on 15 September 2022 that it will start pre-engineering for a new folding boxboard mill in Kaskinen, Finland. The pre-engineering has now been completed and Metsä Board has decided not to proceed with the investment in the Kaskinen folding boxboard mill. The total cost of the planned investment was significantly higher than originally estimated, meaning that the targets for payback time and return on capital employed would not have been met. Metsä Board has decided to launch programmes for new product options as well as growth and development investments at its existing mills in order to implement its strategy to grow in fibre-based packaging materials and renew its industrial operations. The programmes will support Metsä Board's target of fossil-free production by the end of 2030. In addition, the company will continue to develop packaging solutions that reduce the use of plastics.

ATA Truck Tonnage Index Increased 4.3% in February

American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 4.3% in February after decreasing 3.2% in January. In February, the index equaled 116.0 (2015=100) compared with 111.3 in January. “After a very soft January, due in part to winter storms, truck tonnage snapped back in February,” said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. “February’s level was the highest in a year, yet the index still contracted from a year earlier, suggesting truck freight remains in a recession.” January’s decrease was revised up from our February 20 press release. Compared with February 2023, the index fell 1.4%, which was the twelfth straight year-over-year decline. In January, the index was down 4.5% from a year earlier.

New Report Pegs Cost of Electrifying U.S. Commercial Truck Fleet at $1 Trillion

Full electrification of the U.S. commercial truck fleet would require nearly $1 trillion in infrastructure investment alone, according to a new report from Roland Berger released today by the Clean Freight Coalition. The study forecasts a realistic infrastructure buildout for the electrification of medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, exposing what the CFC calls a massive investment gap as state and federal policymakers mandate increased adoption rates of battery-electric commercial vehicles. Key findings: Preparing today’s commercial vehicle fleet for electrification would require the commercial vehicle industry to invest upwards of $620 billion in charging infrastructure alone, including chargers, site infrastructure and electric service upgrades. Utilities would need to invest $370 billion to upgrade their grid networks to meet the demands of just commercial vehicles. This nearly $1 trillion expenditure does not account for the cost of new battery-electric trucks, which according to market research can be two to three times more expensive than their diesel-powered equivalents.

ALA Reports Record Spike in Book Titles Challenged in 2023 (publishersweekly.com)

The American Library Association announced today that the number of unique titles targeted for censorship surged 65% in 2023 compared to 2022, once again hitting record levels. In a release, ALA officials said that 4,240 unique book titles were reported challenged in schools and libraries in 2023, a sharp increase over 2022, when 2,571 unique titles were targeted for removal. ALA also reported 1,247 tracked challenges in 2023, which is down slightly from 1,269 challenges in 2022. But ALA officials stressed that the number does not reflect decreasing challenges, noting that prior to 2021, the vast majority of tracked challenges to library resources came from individuals seeking to remove or restrict access to a single book. Now, as result of an organized political movement and sharing book lists compiled by various groups, the overwhelming majority of tracked challenges come from groups and involve multiple titles.

Electronics For Imaging, Inc., today reported it has completed a life cycle assessment (LCA) of Nozomi single-pass digital print technology in partnership with award-winning sustainability consulting firm Clean Agency. Through this initiative, Clean Agency also developed an LCA tool that EFI™ customers and their customers – such as brands, retailers, and 3PLs – can use to analyze their CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions as part of their overall packaging extended producer responsibility (EPR): the environmental impact of their products, even after their useful life has ended. According to the LCA, printing corrugated materials on an EFI Nozomi digital press reduces global warming potential (GWP) by approximately 50% when compared to analog printing technologies. “No printing plates, less energy, less waste, and just-intime (JIT) manufacturing all contribute to CO2e reductions for corrugated printing on EFI’s Nozomi digital press,” says Seri McClendon, CEO of Clean Agency.

Despite lower prices, volumes in Q4 2023 were higher than Q3 2023 due to increased demand in the latter half of Q4 driven by positive trends in US housing starts and the central banks indicating a pause of further interest rate hikes. *The valuation provision for lumber and log inventory was decreased to $4.3 million from $8.7 million at the end of Q4 2022, generating a $4.4 million credit to cost of sales in fiscal 2023. *US Department of Commerce’s (“US DOC”) Final Determination of its Fourth Administrative Review resulted in a final duty rate of 8.05%. The Paper Workers’ Union has terminated its collective agreements with UPM Pulp, UPM Communication Papers, UPM Specialty Papers, UPM Raflatac and UPM Biofuels businesses to expire mid-term on 21 or 22 April 2024, depending on the agreement. "The Paper Workers’ Union's decision to terminate the collective agreements in the middle of the contract period is regrettable. We had hoped that wage increases and productivity improvements could have been discussed constructively without terminating the agreements. Our aim is to find mutually beneficial solutions without creating unnecessary insecurity," says Jyrki Hollmén, Vice President, Labour Markets at UPM. UPM's businesses and the Paper Workers’ Union have been negotiating for the last two years of the contract period. So far, the negotiations have focused on the parties' objectives. The business environment has changed significantly since the agreements were signed in 2022. UPM donates EUR 400,000 for top research on the overall climate impact of commercial forests

The research, called Carbon Sinks+, aims to understand how commercial forests affect to climate change in ways other than as carbon sinks and stores. For example, forests also have an impact on the formation of aerosol particles and clouds, rainfall and the reflection of sunlight back into space, all of which affect to climate change. “It is not yet known which forest or ecosystem has the greatest overall cooling effect on the atmosphere and by which mechanisms. It is known that forests act as carbon sinks, but the SMEAR (station for measuring Earth surface-atmosphere relations) study aims to find out what else commercial forests do for the climate”, explains Markku Kulmala, Professor of Aerosol and Environmental Physics at the University of Helsinki, who is leading the study. The study will measure more than a thousand different variables, and the main measurement site will be the Hyytiälä forest station at the University of Helsinki, where measurements have been taken for decades.

Fourth Quarter 2023 Results: Net sales decreased 1.1% year-over-year, to $5.7 billion. The fourth quarter included net sales of approximately $164 million from the 14th week. Comparable sales, which compare the 13-week period ending January 27, 2024 versus the 13-week period ended January 28, 2023, decreased 4.3%. Operating income was $299 million compared to $302 million loss in the prior year. As a percentage of total revenue, operating income was 5.0%, an increase of 1,005 basis points year-over-year. Net income was $186 million, or $1.67 per diluted share. This compares to net loss of $273 million, or ($2.49) per diluted share in the prior year.

The fibre side streams of Metsä Board’s Tako paperboard mill are set to benefit nearby farms

Soilfood is processing the fibre-based side streams generated in the production of paperboard from manufacturer Metsä Board, into various soil improvement fibres for local farms. Soilfood has previously used these side streams from Metsä Board's board mills at Kemi and Äänekoski. Now the cooperation has been extended to the Tako mill, located in the centre of Tampere. Metsä Board's cooperation with Soilfood started with a research project initiated in 2015 by the Natural Resources Institute Finland. The study looked at how wood-based fibre sludge had the ability to reduce erosion and nutrients leaching from fields to water bodies. The large-scale use of side streams is part of a new circular economy approach, where raw materials are kept in use as long as possible and existing materials are re-used. The two companies are also working together to develop other new solutions for the beneficial use of existing production side streams. "Our goal is to have zero landfill waste from the processes of our paperboard mills after 2030. Currently, more than 99 per cent of our production side streams are used either as materials or energy.

Costco Wholesale Corporation announced its operating results for the second quarter (twelve weeks) and the first 24 weeks of fiscal 2024, ended February 18, 2024. Net sales for the quarter increased 5.7 percent, to $57.33 billion, from $54.24 billion last year. Net sales for the first 24 weeks increased 5.9 percent, to $114.05 billion, from $107.68 billion last year. Net sales for the Company were negatively impacted by approximately one and one-half percent for the quarter and by approximately one-half percent for the first 24 weeks of fiscal 2024 from the shift of the fiscal calendar, as a result of the fifty-third week last year.

The Massachusetts-based membership warehouse club chain will open its first club in Kentucky, in Louisville, in early 2025. Located near Jefferson Mall, the upcoming location will also include a BJ’s Gas station. The planned entrance into Kentucky, which will be BJ's 21st state, continues the chain’s growth. The company expanded into the nearby states of Tennessee and Alabama in 2023, and at the start of this year, the chain opened its 37th club in Florida. Kruger Products Announces Major Increase in its Facial Tissue Production Capacity

Kruger Products Inc. announced a major increase in its production of Scotties® facial tissues at its Richelieu Plant in Gatineau, Québec. The announcement was made in the presence of Christopher Skeete, Québec Minister for the Economy; Suzanne Tremblay, the Member of the National Assembly for Hull, and Michel Manseau, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Products – Canada, Kruger Products. Through this expansion project, which received investments totalling $14.5 million and created 16 jobs, Kruger Products commissioned a new facial tissue converting line at its Richelieu Plant in November 2023. The additional equipment will increase the production of facial tissue by 25%. Another component of the project will be rolled out at the Laurier Plant, also in Gatineau, where new equipment will collect tissue production residues. With a view to the circular economy, the residues will be repulped for the manufacture of value-added projects. This component, which is expected to be completed in June 2025, will also enable the Laurier and Richelieu Plants to increase their productivity.

Nordstrom Reports Fourth Quarter 2023 Earnings

For the 53-week fiscal year ended February 3, 2024, net earnings were $134 million and diluted EPS was $0.82, with earnings before interest and taxes ("EBIT") of $251 million, or 1.8 percent of sales. Excluding charges related to the wind-down of Canadian operations reported in the first and third quarters and a supply chain asset impairment charge in the fourth quarter, adjusted EBIT was $567 million, or 4.0 percent of sales, and adjusted EPS was $2.12 for fiscal 2023.1 For the fourth quarter, total Company net sales increased 2.2 percent versus the same period in fiscal 2022, inclusive of approximately $190 million related to the 53rd week, and gross merchandise value ("GMV") increased 2.0 percent. Nordstrom banner net sales decreased 3.0 percent and GMV decreased 3.4 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2022. Net sales for Nordstrom Rack increased 14.6 percent.

Optimisation of paperboard can cut the carbon footprint of pharmaceutical packaging by 60%

Pharmaceutical product packaging accounts for a large part of manufacturers’ Scope 3 emissions, which consider, for example raw material production, manufacturing, and end-of-life disposal. According to Metsä Board studies, fresh fibre paperboard can notably reduce the carbon footprint of pharmaceutical packaging by optimising the paperboard in use. Assessments* conducted by Metsä Board demonstrate the significant carbon footprint reductions that pharmaceutical manufacturers can achieve by switching from commonly used grades to Metsä Board fresh fibre paperboards. The lower carbon footprint of Metsä Board’s folding boxboards, compared to the above mentioned boards, is due to the use of fossil free energy in their production and their lighter weight. However, despite the lighter weight, Metsä Board’s folding boxboards still retain the durability and functional properties of traditional heavier grades.

PEFC Spain revised the country’s national forest certification system to ensure its forest management standard is up-to-date and continues to meet stakeholder demands and expectations. The Spanish system was submitted to PEFC after being revised in line with PEFC requirements. The system is now undergoing the PEFC assessment process, carried out by an independent PEFC Registered Assessor. It must pass this assessment to maintain its PEFC endorsement. An important aspect of the assessment process is the public consultation. Over the sixty-day consultation, stakeholders from around the world can give their comments and provide feedback on any aspect of the system. The Registered Assessor will use the information received from this consultation in their assessment of the system.

Parts and Labor Costs Fell Slightly in the Fourth Quarter of 2023

American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council and Decisiv Inc. said combined parts and labor expenses fell 1.4% during the fourth quarter of 2023. In the latest Decisiv/TMC North American Service Event Benchmark Report, TMC and Decisiv found that 25 key VMRS systems dipped in the final quarter of 2023, reversing a 2.1% increase the previous quarter. The decrease was driven largely by parts costs, which dropped 2.2% in the fourth quarter of 2023 while labor costs fell 0.2%. While quarter-over-quarter parts and labor costs both declined in the last three months of the year, the parts-to-labor ratio held steady at about 1.5 for the past year. On a year-over-year basis, combined parts and labor costs in final quarter of 2023 were 0.2% higher than the same quarter in 2022. However, in the annual comparison, a 2.2% drop in parts prices was offset by a 4.0% rise in labor costs.

Huhtamaki to consolidate its production footprint in China

Huhtamaki is planning to consolidate the production footprint in China in the Fiber Foodservice Europe-Asia-Oceania segment and will close its production sites in Tianjin and Shanghai by the end of Q2 2024. The production will be transferred to the manufacturing site in Guangzhou. Additionally, Huhtamaki continues production at the site in Xuzhou. The decision affects 154 employees in the two sites. Huhtamaki will support the impacted employees and provide assistance in finding new employment. The aim of the consolidation is to optimize the manufacturing footprint, improve the competitiveness and strengthen the foundation for future growth in the region. The announced change is part of Huhtamaki’s program to accelerate strategy implementation, announced in November 2023, expected to materially support the profitability of Huhtamaki with efficiency improvements leading to savings of approximately EUR 100 million over the next three years.

Plastics producer, which has a recycled-content product line, will attend the Flexible Packaging Association’s annual meeting to seek customer feedback on sustainability issues. Inteplast Engineered Films (IEF) and Inteplast BOPP Films, makers of packaging films based in Livingston, New Jersey, says it will have staff members at a March business conference in order to “dive deeper into the fluid and frequently shifting landscape of sustainable packaging.” The packaging materials firm, known collectively as Inteplast Group, says it will have a presence at the Flexible Packaging Association’s 2024 annual meeting in Tucson, Arizona, this March 20-22. “We’re very excited about joining the FPA,” says IEF President Bob Stein. “As a guest at the fall 2023 meeting, I found the association’s agenda to be very relevant to IEF and our focus on developing, producing and selling our sustainable films, which are branded under our InteGreen label.

ANDRITZ supplied energy-efficient and environmentally leading technology for UPM’s largest investment to date. With a capacity to produce 2.1 million tons of eucalyptus pulp per year, the mill is the biggest in Uruguay and the world’s biggest single line mill in operation. It will also contribute around 1 TWh of surplus green electricity per year to the Uruguayan power supply. UPM will use the pulp from the Paso de los Toros mill to meet the rising demand of existing customers, particularly in China, but also to target new markets. Having successfully established itself as a reliable pulp supplier in the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe during the last decade, UPM is now using this experience, as well as the increased capacity, to develop the North American market.

COLORED PAPERS: Do deep colors affect the recyclability of paper?

Fedrigoni has set the goal for 2030 to have 100% of its special paper families with a verified level of recyclability according to the Aticelca 501/19 method, one of the most rigorous and in line with current regulations. If the paper product falls into one of the four recyclability classes (A+, A, B, C), it means that it can be collected in paper and recycled in paper mills, and the company is authorized to use the “Recyclable with paper – Aticelca® 501” mark for commercial purposes. More intense colors can generate a drop in recylability class (for example, bringing the classification from an A+ level to an A level if going from a light color to a more intense one), limit the use of paper, or require a greater use of colors or coatings to cover intensely colored fibers. In addition, the recycling of differently colored and deep papers leads to the creation of gray recycled papers, with optical inhomogeneity; these papers can only be used for limited applications (for example, inside a box). Ad Price Inflation Continues To Decelerate, TV Remains Deflationary (mediapost.com)

Even as U.S. consumer price inflation has begun moderating, advertisers and planners and buyers are seeing their costs move in the opposite direction -- especially for TV and "print" media -- according to just-released first quarter media price inflation estimates form ECI Media Management. While TV ad costs continue to be under water and moving in a deflationary direction, the erosion of TV ad pricing power has improved from -5.1% in 2023 to -3.1% this year, according to ECI's tracking. Despite improvements in TV, newspaper and magazine prices, the overall cost of U.S. media has declined from a 1.5% inflation rate in 2023 to a 1.4% rate in 2024, with the main drivers being digital and out-of-home media, though radio has been inching up too.

It’s been hard to avoid the conversation around postal rates in the commercial and direct mail printing industry during the past few years. As Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has made aggressive moves to bring the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) into profitability after the requirement to pre-pay the organization’s pension fund was finally relaxed, printers have borne the brunt of those rising prices. Print buyers have started pushing back when it comes to higher mailing costs, especially as the costs of everything from the inks, to the paper, to the labor running the presses have also been on the rise. But what does the actual landscape look like for print providers on the postal rate front? And how are they managing the increases? Unfortunately, the bulk of those increases seems to have come rapidly during the past couple of years, leaving commercial/direct mail printers and print buyers alike scrambling to compensate for costs that are significantly higher. A few cents per piece spread out across thousands — if not hundreds of thousands — of pieces adds up fast, after all, and can take a huge chunk out of the direct marketing budget before anyone can blink. And that impact is being felt as buyers pull back on the number of pieces they’re mailing to compensate for those higher costs.
