2017 PEFC Collaboration Fund: Two Days Left to Apply!

PEFC_CF_2017_Apply-nowIf you haven’t yet submitted your proposal to the 2017 PEFC Collaboration Fund make sure you do so soon – the deadline is just two days away on 31 March 2017.

PEFC members and other non-profit organizations are all invited to submit proposals for new and innovative projects. Make sure you check out our Call for Proposals and then send us your application form.

So what are we looking for?

  • Applicants can submit a wide range of projects, but in particular we are interested in:
  • New approaches or activities that raise awareness, communicate and promote certification or certified products;
  • Capacity building that enables the expansion of forest certification;
  • Research relevant to PEFC International’s Sustainability Benchmarks or the implementation of national standards;
  • Research and exploration to further integrate new products, services and/or approaches into PEFC certification systems.

Proposals can request a PEFC contribution of anything up to 40,000 CHF and should have a project timeframe up to two years. Grantees must provide evidence of at least 35% additional co-funding from other sources within the overall project budget. All proposals must be submitted using the application form.

Public consultation: Japanese forest certification system

Stakeholders from around the world are invited to give feedback on the revised national forest certification system for Japan. Deadline for comments is 16 July. Give your feedback now! SGEC/PEFC Japan revised the country’s national forest certification system following the entry into force of the revised 2018 PEFC Sustainable Forest Management standard. After revising the national system in line with PEFC requirements, SGEC/PEFC Japan submitted the revised system to PEFC. The national system is now undergoing the PEFC assessment process, carried out by an independent PEFC Registered Assessor. It must pass this assessment to maintain its PEFC endorsement.

Top marks for PEFC International in Dutch timber procurement assessment

PEFC International meets all Dutch procurement criteria for timber. This is the conclusion of the Dutch Timber Procurement Assessment Committee (TPAC), that gave full marks to PEFC International. TPAC assesses certification systems for compliance with the sustainable procurement policy of the Dutch government. Following the assessment, TPAC has recommended the Dutch State Secretary for Infrastructure and the Environment to continue the approval and acceptance of PEFC with regards to the Dutch procurement policy.

Bee Part of the Solution

Imagine walking out of work for some fresh air and seeing a couple of bees flying around and then looking up to see a massive hive containing thousands of them. That's exactly what happened to an employee at our Green Bay Broadway mill. After it was reported, the first call was made to pest control to get rid of it. Once pest control identified the species of the bees, it was determined that it would be extremely valuable to the environment to relocate them vs. exterminating them. It turns out that the hive contained over 14,000 bees! Rescuing a swarm can be a difficult process but thankfully the Brown County Beekeepers Association was able to come rescue the swarm. Swarms can be captured in a variety of ways. In this case, the honeybees were removed by using a shop vac and a carrier. Yes, you read that right, the honeybees were vacuumed straight into the carrier that they needed to be transported in—surprisingly, it's a very safe process for the bees.
